NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 2, 2010 — Steel buildings are popular because of their affordability, strength, durability and versatility. They are the ideal product for garages, sheds, homes, warehouses and storage facilities. When shopping for steel buildings there are four things that one should keep in mind.
1. Consider needs and compare prices. Generally, both a residential and commercial steel building is built to fulfill a specific need. A buyer must first consider what features are absolutely necessary. When comparing prices, they should keep this priority list in mind. If there is an option that meets all the needs but is more expensive, the buyer should consider spending the additional funds to ensure they get what is required in the structure.
2. Look at the details in the metal building agreement. Buyers need to review the details in the purchase agreements before signing. Special specifications that were discussed and requested should be included in the order. This should include every item needed from start to finish of the job.
3. As in every building project, code compliance is important. These vary from municipalities and standards should be reviewed before purchasing steel buildings. This should be figured before buying or signing a contract – not just before building begins.
4. Writing up a contract. All aspects of the deal should be in writing before construction begins. This applies to purchase agreement with the manufacturers, documents with brokers and agreements on labor cost with subcontractors. The complete cost should be in writing and signed by both parties.

We presented the program, entitled “Pre-Engineered Metal Building Sustainability and Design,” at METALCON International, our industry’s premier professional event.
