Attorney General Madrid Warns New Mexico Churches About Colorado Metal Building Company

Published by admin under steel buildings

(Santa Fe, NM)— Attorney General Patricia Madrid issued a consumer alert today, directing her warning at churches or other organizations that might be considering the construction of prefabricated steel buildings through General Steel, a Lakewood, Colorado-based company.

Attorney General Madrid said, “The Colorado Attorney General’s Office has filed a lawsuit against General Steel after receiving hundreds of complaints, including a number from New Mexico consumers. In recent months, General Steel’s advertising in New Mexico has been targeting church congregations who may be looking at adding on to their churches. The Colorado Attorney General’s office informed my office that during their investigation, they discovered approximately one-fourth of consumers from around the nation who were defrauded by this company were churches, each of which lost almost $10,000.”

New Mexicans who have been victimized by General Steel should immediately contact the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. Consumers defrauded by General Steel between January 1, 2000 and March 1, 2004 have until November 19, 2005 to join Colorado’s lawsuit. To join the lawsuit, consumers should file a complaint with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office by calling (303) 866-4500. Written complaints can be mailed to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, 1525 Sherman Street, 5th Floor, Denver, Colorado 80203, attention Nancy Bullis. Complaints should be filed with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office no later than November 19, 2005. Further information about the lawsuit is available by calling (303) 866-3762. Complaint forms and the Court’s order can be found on the Colorado Attorney General’s web site at www.ago.co.state.us.

Any New Mexico consumer defrauded after March 1, 2004, should file a complaint with Attorney General Madrid’s Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-800-678-1508. Consumer complaint forms are also available for download on the Attorney General’s website at www.ago.state.nm.us.

General Steel frequently advertises their steel buildings on TV and radio, often targeting church congregations looking for low-cost ways to expand their sanctuaries or educational buildings. Customers are often led to believe that they are buying a complete building. In most cases, the company doesn’t disclose that the quoted construction price of these metal buildings does not include the installation of doors and windows, which are charged at a hefty price. Without the doors and windows, the consumer has obviously only purchased a metal box.

New Mexico consumers have complained that General Steel has engaged in “bait and switch” tactics and non-disclosure of all fees and conditions of the sale. In many cases, consumers have complained that General Steel faxes all documents for review and final authorization, but fails to fax the reverse side of each page, which cites their “no refund” policy and details of other charges. After the customer sends them a $10,000 to $12,000 deposit, the company sends a diagram of the proposed building represented as nothing more than a featureless rectangle, asks the customer to draw the desired placement of doors and windows and fax back the layout to General Steel.

Only after General Steel receives the initial deposit and final diagram, does General Steel inform the consumer of an additional $30,000 to $40,000 charge for windows and doors. The consumer is often shocked and asks for their money back. At that point, it is General Steel’s normal practice to then inform the consumer of the company’s “no refund” policy and their requirement that the customer pay for 60% of “liquidated damages.”

Attorney General Madrid stresses that consumers considering the services of any company offering similar services should first check with the Better Business Bureau. By law, full disclosure of all charges and fees must be made at the time the contract is signed. “Protect yourself and your investment by making sure you know the experience other customers have had with the company,” said Madrid.

“Consumers should never blindly send a deposit without first getting all terms and conditions in writing. Get full disclosure of what’s included in the entire building package, all materials, all accessories including windows and doors, and make sure the project’s specifications meet municipal building codes in the designated construction area,” cautioned Madrid.
In December 2004, a Colorado Court found that General Steel “for years engaged in sales practices that were riddled with misrepresentations and omissions.” In addition to imposing a fine of $200,000 on the company’s president, Jeffrey Knight, four other company employees were also fined by the Court at $20,000 each. General Steel was also ordered to pay restitution to consumer victims who testified at trial in amounts between $3,000 and $10,000 each.

Standard Steel Buildings offers affordable, efficient and flexible steel church buildings

Published by admin under Uncategorized

2008-10-23 23:06:32 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com – Dallas News News)

Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — A church building requires a strong structure that can accommodate many people, while built at an affordable price and with efficient materials. The best option for a church building is a flexible steel building from Standard Steel Buildings. Why?

Steel buildings provide a congregation with an inexpensive, flexible, low maintenance and energy efficient structure that can be designed to fit almost any requirement. In an effort to save customers money, Standard Steel Buildings has devised to save them 50% off the cost of conventional church building construction while having it built in only a fraction of the time.

As a standard, churches need to have a common, large, open space with a functional floor plan for an easy flow of traffic. One of the best reasons to choose a flexible steel building is because they maintain a free opening of at least 300 feet wide. Having a column-free structure means there is more open space and less wasted areas for activities.

In more recent times, steel church buildings no longer look like bleak warehouses. In fact, steel is compatible with most materials that are used in construction giving customers several exterior options to choose from including stone, brick, slate and stucco, along with a full line of doors, windows and accessories that give customers the ability to customize the project.

According to the Standard Steel Buildings website, “At Standard Steel Buildings, steel church buildings are shipped from 12 manufacturing plants within the US. All of our shipping points are AISC certified (American Institute Of Steel Construction) and in good standing with the MBMA (Metal Building Manufacturing Association). We take great pride in only using American steel, ensuring that our customers receive only the best quality church steel buildings available.”

Portable factory makes steel frame production easy

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Posted by admin on April 3, 2010
A self-contained mobile factory that produces steel frames for construction has been launched in Dubai by New Zealand company Framecad.

The Framecad Mobile Factory, dubbed ‘The Factory in a Can’, is housed in a modified 20ft shipping container, meaning it can be shipped, trucked or airlifted into any location and made operational within 24 hours of delivery.

With its own diesel generator and computer-operated production, the factory manufactures steel frames at the rate of 700 metres per hour.

“One major benefit is the manufacturing of pre-engineered structures that can be produced, assembled and maintained by a local labour force, even where skill levels are low and there is no reliable infrastructure,” said Mark Taylor, chairman of Framecad.

“Also, production is computer controlled so every piece of framing produced is numbered and coded so it can be easily assembled. “

“Another significant advantage is the mobile factory helps reduce construction costs because the framing is produced on site instead of having to be transported from a fixed facility.

“Transportation costs can also be a big factor when large projects are being developed in remote areas. With the mobile factory, you can get in and get the project started very quickly and of course, once the project is completed, the factory can be relocated to another site.

The mobile factory was originally designed for commercial building companies wanting to build multiple homes in large-scale developments. It has increasingly been used in disaster relief situations.

Steel Building Structures Vary Widely In Design

Published by admin under steel buildings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 29, 2008 –

Rhino Steel Building Systems, Denton, Texas — When purchasing a pre-engineered steel building, the basic structural design is one of the first aspects to be determined. “While the typical steel building buyer has no idea of what type of steel design structure he will need, this is not a problem,” according to Bruce Brown at Rhino Steel Building Systems.

The typical parameters that are required to determine the proper structural design include footprint size, price, application, building height and local codes. From there, the building is pre-engineered accordingly. According to Brown, “We recently sold a Pre engineered building for a manufacturing facility in Texas. The customer needed a large 200′ x 300′ space with no posts inside that would interfere with all the equipment that would be placed in the plant. This was no problem for us.

Our clear span structural packages can span up to with no interior post required. The cost is higher but when free space is required, we can deliver.” When lowering cost is a consideration, a minimal number of posts can be included. Heavy snow and wind loads can also affect the decision on steel structural design.

Rhino Steel Building Systems is an authorized dealer for a variety of steel building manufacturers and can ship from 7 locations across the continental United States.

Innovative use of Bi-Steel at Rothschild Bank’s new London HQ

Published by admin under steel buildings

08 Jul 2010

Bi-Steel helped the architect of this exciting development, OMA, of which Pritzker Prize Award winner Rem Koolhaas, is a founder and partner, to achieve its vision for this new building in the City of London.

Rothschild Bank’s new headquarters in the City of London is a striking glass and steel structure rising from narrow St Swithin’s Lane, in the financial heart of the Square Mile.

The 16-storey structure, the third Rothschild building on this site since it moved to London during the Napoleonic Wars, is designed to serve as the central location for the Bank’s London staff. The building is a steel framed structure, its stability coming from cores. Creating the double height glass ground floor entrance called for innovation in design, and Structural Engineer for the project, Arup, chose Bi-Steel for its strength and buildability to create an ‘L’ shaped core that forms 2 sides of the structure. This core begins on the ground floor and rises to 54m to the building’s 10th floor.

This core was against a party wall and Corefast’s innovative bolted system meant that to construct this core access was required from one side only.

For the lower 2 layers Bi-Steel panels with 20mm plate sandwiched between 300mm of concrete were used. This represented the strongest Bi-Steel panels used so far in building core construction. This part of the core had to accommodate very large forces from the transfer structure. In addition the large stiffness requirements meant that the alternative concrete solutions would be twice as thick and encroach into the entrance area.

Bi-Steel was also selected to form the extension of the structure’s main concrete core for levels 11 to 15 as it enabled maximum floorspace to be achieved in these narrower top floors due to its small footprint.

The rapid construction of the cores resulted in programme savings for the project.

New Wisconsin Air Academy Taxis for Liftoff

Published by admin under steel buildings

[Sturtevant, Wisconsin - Sep, 5 2007] – The ground is breaking on September 10, 2007 for the Wisconsin Air Academy, a new kind of boarding and day school designed to place young people on the path towards a career in the aviation industry. A first of its kind, the Wisconsin Air Academy is the only private day school sanctioned by the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), the civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force.

After leaving the Florida Air Academy to return to his home state of Wisconsin, Jeff Starke turned to Allied Steel Buildings to provide the best possible solution for the construction of the new academy. “I truly wanted to help influence incredibly positive additions to society, and to do that I needed to provide the best possible value for the students attending the academy,” explained Jeff Starke, the developer of the Air Academy project. “I had worked with Allied Steel Buildings in the past, and knew they could provide the highest quality building and project management at the best possible price. Now we can have a fantastic facility and provide the students with an exceptional value for their education.”

The new 44,000 square foot Wisconsin facility, designed and manufactured by Allied Steel buildings will include a main hall, an indoor gymnasium, classrooms, an operations center, and dormitories for boarding school students.

“The opportunity to be involved with a complete design build project like the Wisconsin Air Academy is really satisfying,” said Michael Lassner, President of Allied Steel. “It’s a great feeling to know we can provide an economical, high quality building solution that will provide a unique educational experience for what will soon be thousands of Wisconsin’s young people.”

The Wisconsin Air Academy hopes to set a new group of middle-school aged students on the path to be America’s next generation of first responders. “Air Marshals, military and airline pilots, Air Traffic Controllers,” explained project developer Jeff Starke, “those are many of the folks that are on the front lines of our nation’s security. Instead of focusing on school rivalries and trivial activities, we can help influence the future of the country’s emergency response abilities.”

The construction commences today in partnership with Liberty Construction Management, a certified Allied Builder headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., and is scheduled to be completed by January 2008. The Wisconsin Air Academy will bring thirty eight new jobs to the community and an immeasurable positive influence to Wisconsin’s young people.
